Autumn is one of the most beautiful seasons to visit and make excursions in Ushuaia, however, you have to take into account some things before traveling. Here, everything you need to know.
What clothes should I bring to Ushuaia in the fall?
In the autumn months is usually when it rains the most in Ushuaia, that is why it is ideal to have waterproof clothing, which you can take with you or rent once you are in the city.
With this statement, we are not saying that it will rain every day, but it rains more than in other seasons and having a waterproof jacket and shoes is very important to go out and enjoy nature and the city. Keep in mind that all excursions, such as the visit to the Beagle Channel, can be done in the same way, even if it rains or snows.
Although autumn is the season with the highest rainfall, you will see in the city that very few people use umbrellas, and this is because in Patagonia it is windy, and umbrellas tend to break easily.
In addition to a jacket and waterproof footwear, we recommend wearing a hat, scarf, gloves and, if you have them, thermal clothing. For additional information, see what to bring to Ushuaia in winter.
What are the fall prices in Ushuaia?
The months of April (after Easter), May and June are considered low season in Ushuaia, and by this we mean that you can find good rates for airfare, accommodation, food and excursions. A good part of the offer maintains the rates that were in summer, which makes it attractive to travel and discover the End of the World.
Are all activities available all year round?
Most of the excursions are available all year round, but if we had to name some that are no longer available in autumn, the most relevant ones are the Navigation to the Penguin Colony and the visit to Puerto Almanza.
In the case of the Penguin Colony, three species of penguins can be sighted at Isla Martillo in summer, the Papua penguins, the Magellanic penguins and the King penguins. These last two species migrate at the end of March and beginning of April, so there is only one stable colony all year round, the Papua penguins, however, they spend most of their time in the water which significantly reduces the sightings and therefore during the months of autumn, winter and early spring this excursion is not made.
Regarding the excursions to Puerto Almanza, the accessibility to this small fishing village is through a gravel road called Complementary Route J, access that becomes more difficult as we get closer to winter due to trafficability and safety issues. It should also be noted that many of the small restaurants that are visited for lunch during this excursion are closed during the low season, partly due to lack of visitors and also because it is the time when the owners of these places take their vacations.
Can you see snow in autumn in Ushuaia?
As a consequence of the latitude and the proximity to Antarctica, Ushuaia has an average annual temperature that ranges between -5º below zero and 10º positive, so at any time of the year we can be surprised by snow. However, until late June, when winter has already begun, and early July, there is not enough snow for winter activities such as skiing or snowmobile rides.
From mid-autumn onwards, depending on the year, we can see the mountains with snow almost every day, but it is not usual for snow to accumulate in the city.
